Deer

Red deer are found throughout Fiordland National Park.

 

Wapiti

Wapiti are found in the area between Charles and Sutherland Sounds on the western coast, and the Doon and Worsley Valleys on the shores of Lake Te Anau.

 

Chamois

Chamois are found predominantly in the northern sector of Fiordland National Park. 

 

Pigs

Wild pigs can be found in small numbers within the Fiordland National Park (e.g Waitutu Forest) and in some of surroundoing areas.

 

Possums

High densities of possums are found north of Milford Sound and around Lakes Te Anau, Manapouri, Hauroko and Monowai.

Do I need a permit?

 

Almost all of Fiordland National Park is a ‘closed area’ (closed to all dogs). Controlled access is allowed within the national park boundary in the Waitutu Forest, Supply Bay area (near Manapouri), and some small areas on the eastern side of Lake Te Anau between the Ewe Burn and Camp Bay. 

 

 

Permits

Open Area Hunting Permits are available online for the whole of Fiordland National Park, excluding specially protected areas.  For more information or to apply online click here .

 

Possum Permit - A possum permit is valid for six months and is required for both poisoning and trapping.  Contact the DOC Fiordland District Office for an information pack. 

 

Canada Goose Permit - There is a balloted goose block between Dunton Creek and Te Anau Lake shore available.  Bookings and permits are required.  Only one hunting party will be present on the block within a booking period. Contact the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre to apply.

 

Permits for Wapiti Area Hunting of Wapiti is possible throughout the year, except for the bugle period from mid February until around the middle of April, when the wapiti area is subject to a ballot.  Click here for more information on the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation and the ballot process.
